1958 (approx) above First Communion Photo

Here is another First Communion photo from St. Mary’s, with Miss Talty and Dean Purcell. It must be about 1958. As far as I know we were the last group to be taken by Miss Talty. I’m on the right of the second row from the front, behind George Mullaney and next to Carol Tuohey. On the far left of the front row are John Hogan and Michael Quinlan. I can’t remember all the names accurately, but I’m sure others can fill in. David Lamb is on the left of the second row, third left is Michael Atherton and next to him Jean Dickenson, who was born on the same day as me. Tony Gallagher is peeping through at the back. I can’t remember the next to him, but then there are Bernard Todd and Tony Flynn and (I think) Eddie Allen. In the middle of the back row is David(?) Molloy.

(Thanks to Carrie Creamer Hart (Canada) for sending this photo. It does show Carrie's grandmother, who is Rose Mary Davies and she is right smack in the middle of the picture (blonde curly haired girl... third row, 9th from the left).

Dear Bryan
A few words about the image '1933-34 . . . girls only' submitted by
Carrie Creamer Hart.
Re-reading the late Arthur Chappell's account of St Mary's parish I
learnt that the picture depicts the girls wearing the school uniform -
hence the gymslips.
It seems St Mary's was the first elementary school in the town to adopt
a uniform.
Initially intended only for the girls, parents of the boys argued all
the pupils in the school should have uniforms.
This popular innovation was introduced during the headship of Mr Owen
Lindsay.
Appointed to the Haslingden school in 1921, Mr Lindsay spent most of his
career at St Mary's and remained there to the time of his retirement.
The practice  of wearing the uniform was suspended with the outbreak of
World War II.
According the the local chronicler, the uniform gave the children a
feeling of equality and they showed care for their clothing.

Regards
John Dunleavy.  (Received Mail  25th July 2015)

(13th April 2012) And below is a email kindly received from Dick Bateman of Chapel-en-le-Frith. In regards to Miss Mary Nevin teacher at Haslingden St. Marys School in the early 1920s.
"Hi there,
I've enjoyed your blog - well done! One name brought me to it, that of Miss Nevin, the young teacher pictured with the class "in the early 1920s". If it's the Miss Mary Nevin I think it is, she was born in Accrington in 1903, and was my Infants 2 teacher at St Mary's RC Primary School in Worthing, Sussex in 1957. The fact that I reported to my Mum one day that Miss Nevin had read a story to us all about Peter Pan and Captain "Hoook" - rhyming it with Luke - would seem to indicate that she was one and the same. That's not how we pronounced it in Sussex!Anyway, I realise that you are unlikely to know anything more about Miss Nevin, but thought I'd share this with you, just so that you know that such resources as yours bear fruit in very unexpected places!
Best wishes
Dick Bateman (Born and brought up in Worthing, now in Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire)

Email from Michael Mullaney dated 26th November 2014 (In response to a earlier email from Sheila McConville relating to teacher Miss Spiers.

St. Marys infants, housed in the top end of the school, three classes, outside toilets at the other end of the school yard, tippler closets, you asked to go and was given a piece of toilet paper, the yard in those days was not tarmacked just rough and uneven, air raid shelters in the yard which were always a source of adventure as was the school garden - entry level Miss Spiers, what a dear old lady must have been well past retirement.  The grand open coal fire was great and they put camp beds up in the afternoon and everyone had a lay down and nap, not sure if that was for the kids benefit of to give miss Spiers a break!  Then we moved up to Mrs Brennans and then onto Miss Briggs, the head, a small red head with a firey temper.  She had a leather strap about 3 inches wide with tails, I was on the receiving end on many occasions.  After infants we moved into the junior section and Miss Talty, where we either learnt to write properly or  missed out (I missed out).  We were well grounded by Miss Talty in all thing religious and can remember practicing for walking days etc by being paraded relentlessly  around the playground with your left hand on your tummy and the right gripping a ruler which doubled for the flowers you would be carrying on the day.  Practice makes perfect.  Miss Talty came from County Clare in southern Ireland is buried in the cemetery at Milltown Malby where she was born into a large family of teachers.  Miss Talty used to put the fear of God into every child and would grasp your hand and bring down a ruler to smack you with and then stop within an inch of your hand and let you off with a verbal warning.  Others were: Miss Murray, Miss Clement, Mr Brennan, Miss Redfern, Mr Monks and Mr Lindsey.  Later changes: Mr Lunt, Miss Spencer, and the dynamic due, the nuns Sister Mary Carmel and Sister Mary Philomena and Mrs Griffin.  All in all not a bad time but wish one had done better!
Michael

Email from Sheila McConville dated 29th November 2014 (follow up)

I know Michael must be younger than me because it was Miss Spiers Miss Birch Miss Briggs then big school Miss Talty who did slap my naughty hand then asked if you would like a penny or a holy picture .! In Miss Briggs naughty children stood in St Joesephs corner I new him well ! There was a lovely garden at the bottom of the yard tended by boys mostly ,thought that splendid idea for students not keen on the 3 Rs Happy days to remember Cheers Sheila

Hi Bryan,
I have attached 4 pictures taken in the centre of Haslingden of what I think is part of
a St.Mary`s Rose Queen parade though not entirely sure. The year is about 1959.
The leader of the Morris Dancers is Maureen Ashe,
And my sister Elaine is on the last two but in different positions so on the Savings Bank
Photo she in last place and Relayvision photo she is next to last place
Best Regards

Steve

Add caption Steve Rothwell kindly sent in this photo of the interior of St. Marys and suggest that it is the coffin of a past priest.  It is suggested it could be of Father Notterdam.

Hi Bryan
I dont know where this was taken or the occasion, but that's my mum Vera Hall (nee Entwhistle) on far right in dutch girl costume, and the lady in the welsh outfit is I think Mary Watson.
My mum went to St Mary's RC church so it may have been to do with that ??
