On the top photo: 5 women sat inspecting, the middle one is Annie Howarth  she was the organist at the church. There is a plaque in the church saying she was the organist for I think 60 years. I need to visit to check if my memory is correct. Born 9th Feb 1896 She would tell us of a ghost that would visit her and stand at the foot of her bed at 16 Bowker vale.

Wade - Clegg family

This is a early photo of the Wade family kindly shared to us by Raymond Clegg Jnr
the Great Grandson of Mr. Bidwell Wade shown in the photo.

The soldier in the photograph is my great grandfather Bidwell Wade. The little boy is my grandad Robert (Bob) Wade. Bidwell was awarded the Military medal for bravery in battle in Arras Northern France in 1917.He fought off a German advance, defending a machine gun nest when all his comrades apart from the commanding officer had been killed.

This is again showing Bob Wade Snr with Haslingden Cricket Club (1932)
Shown in the photo front row to the right hand and also shown in caricature (above)
(Cuttings kindly shared by his Grandson Raymond Clegg Jnr)
Bob Wade was the wicket keeper. He recalls stumping Learie Constantine only for the umpire to give him not out.Bob said he was 2 inches outside his crease.Learie turned to Bob
and said,’Aye I was out lad but they’ve all come to see me bat,not you keep wicket.’

(Photo: Kindly shared to us by Robert's nephew Raymond)

Robert was the Communications Officer on the "John Biscoe" He made many visits to Antartica. The ship would often stop off at the Falklands Isles and Bob had many friends there. At xmas time 1981 Bob was telling us that there was going to be trouble with Argentina. Returning from Antartica the John Biscoe picked up marines in Montevideo Uruguay and dropped them at Port Stanley. Facing overwhelming odds when Argentina invaded, the marines had no option other than to surrender. The conflict then escalated into war.
Robert (Bobby) was well know to lots of us and used to live at No.3 Brook Street (off Hud Hey)
