Blackburn Road beneath Springside, near Station Steps (Click over to enlarge)

Heather commented about how the houses here had no footpath frontages and the front doors opened up straight out onto Blackburn Road.  Thankfully them days the traffic was not so busy. Of interest also you can see the garage in the place where Margerison's used to be and also sandwiched between the standing property and the garage are the iron railings which used to be public conveniences

Dear Bryan Yorke,
I’m writing in about some interesting pictures contributed recently by Joyce Thorne.
On 16 November: ‘Church Lads Brigade at Station Steps, Blackburn Road’ - I was struck by the narrowness of the pavement for the spectators on the right - I remember the houses but how could people have managed to live with only a few inches of space outside their front door? It must have seemed normal then - the main road was what their front door opened onto.
My picture from July 1969 shows that row’s demolition in progress.
And on 19 & 20 November, two more pictures, from 1954, showing ‘the back of Spring Street long before the West View Estate’ and part of Hud Rake. This area was large, with many hen pens. (We used to live next door to Mrs Paton, on Hud Rake!). My photos show the same area in August 1970, taken before the houses were demolished but when the hen pens were being cleared.

You have been very busy lately, I see - great stuff!
Best wishes,
Heather Holden

Hello Bryan,

My name is Geoff Heap, son of Fred and Alice and brother of Win.  Spent my early days at Ryehill Cottage, which was attached to St. Peter's Vicarage.  The cottage was demolished in the late 50s and is now a double garage.  In 1952 we moved to Whitecroft Mount, where I remained until my marriage in 1968; I am now an ex-pat living in Bury.

I first discovered your site a couple of years ago and now spend time every week, finding photos of long lost friends, most of whom I have not seen for over 60 years, remembering places and events - the 1950 Carnival, Empire and Palace Flicks, '64 Hailstones, playing cricket in Victoria Park, St Peter's Scouts, County Primary School etc., the memories come flooding back, keep up the excellent work.

There is one group of pics. which particularly holds my interest.  When I reached Secondary School age, a lifelong family friend, the Rev. Wilfred Speakman, vicar of St. Peter's, advised my parents that they should send me to a single sex school as he considered girls to be a distraction and my education could suffer.  I was therefore packed off to Accrington Grammar School, leaving all my friends behind, who no doubt welcomed female distraction at HGS.  As I gaze wistfully at the HGS pics, recognising all my old pals, I think what might have been if only I had been given the choice, but enough of this wallowing.

I have attached some old photos which may be of interest,
More to follow
Cheers,
Geoff Heap

The Vale Street Weaver

From Vale Street and down to Mill in bottom,
You could hear lots of cloggy noise of wood with steel,
Clipping and thudding those polished setts that shone.
“To mill we’re going to weave the cloth”.

Every day before the light, we trod that weary way,
Smoggy haze dimmed the flickering gas street light,
We’d chat the news of who’s courting who,
“Whilst on way to mill to weave the cloth”.

Some had a large brown tuck box under arm,
Which had straps crossing from either side.
Some were carrying their “Billy Cans”,
“Whilst on our way to mill to weave the cloth”.

Were here again at Mill to start up steely loom,
Another long day watching shuttle go past,
With belts, pulleys and deafening noise!
Whilst we weave that ‘plain Jane’ grey cloth

I hope I don’t need tackler today, and weft will be OK,
Until they bring another beam on bogey straight away,
I guess I can sing the weaver’s song to pass the time of day,
Whilst I weave a cloth of plenty to earn another day!

BELOW IS A ARCHIVE OF INTERESTING STORIES AND PHOTOS OF THE LATE "ALF BEDFORD" WHO LIVED AT HELMSHORE - Kindly sent in by Andy Metcalfe who is Great Grandson of Alf

Reproduced from local newspaper (undated)

Man who rode a penny-farthing up 'Ha'penny Brow' dies at 90

One of Helmshore's liveliest and most interesting characters, and one of the oldest residents of the area, 90 year old Mr. Alfred Bedford, has died.
Mr. Bedford, 24 Brooklands Avenue, Helmshore, lived for many years in Free Lane, and until a few years ago was remarkably fit and active.
He used to keep fit by riding his bicycle.
It was in 1890, when he was 16, that he got his first bicycle - a penny farthing, which he rode for five years, and he later confessed that he had been shot over the big front wheel on many occasions.
He believed hed was the only person every to ride a penny-farthing up Preston's notorious "Ha'penny Brow".
But he soon switched to the more conventional type of machine, and until well in his 80s he used to be seen riding it on the way to the market or taking a spin along Helmshore's leafy lanes

SIGNALMAN

He retired in 1939 from the position of signalman at Helmshore Station after completing 44 years service with the Lancashire and Yorkshire and LMS railway companies.
The retirement day was his birthday, and the stationmaster presented him with a fountain pen, a pipe and tobacco.
He began his railway service at Helmshore in March, 1894, as a porter.
In 1896 he was transferred to Haslingden as a signalman and in 1897 succeeeded his brother as signalman at Helmshore.
Except that for a short time he took over duties as relief signalman, he remained at Helmshore until his retirement.
Many changes were witnessed by Mr. Bedford in his career.
He remembered the time when Helmshore level crossing had no overhead footbridge, but two wicket gates.

MISSED THREE DAYS

So good was his health during his working life that he was off duty because of sickness on only three days during the 44 years.
The house 584 Free Lane, Helmshore, where he lived alone until the last few months after the death of his wife in 1939, was as bright as if a woman cared for it.
He kept his spirit young with three hobbies - brasses, music and clocks.
On the mantlepiece over the fireplace at his home there used to be a collection of curious brasses, gleaming with polish.
Side by side with ornamental pieces were powder horns for the muzzle-loading muskets, and a shot case, heavy with the small round shot.
He was also proud of a grandmother and grandfather clock, both of which he built himself, the latter out of five tea boxes.

"MUSICAL MARVEL"

Music was his real hobby, however, and he played the violin, concertina and piano.  He once appeared at Haslingden Public Hall, billed as "The Musical Marvel".
He claimed to have played in every pub, club, church and chapel in Helmshore, and once composed a piece entitled "Free laner", a hymn tune, which was later played at the Public Hall.
He had lived in Helmshore all his life and was known as a comic and entertainer.
Among his memories was that of drinking beer from a mug hung on the wall of "Ye Old Man And Scythe Inn", Bolton. The Seventh Earl of Derby had had his last drink out of the mug before he was beheaded in front of the hostelry in 1651.
Mr. Bedford, who had lived at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. Rawstron, in Brooklands Avenue, Helmshore, for the past few months, was cremated at Accrington on Thursday. The Rev L.B. Burton officiated.

RECALLING THOSE SWEEPING SKIRTS:
Have you ever seen a "tucker-upper"? No, it's got nothing to do with putting the youngsters to bed, but is a reminder of those Edwardian days when the womenfolk used to wear skirts which were neither kneelength nor even ankle-length, but which extended right down to the ground and sometimes a little bit beyond

Lancastrian was shown a "tucker-upper" the other day by Mr. Alf Bedford of Helmshore, a man who has made a habit throughout his long life of collecting items of historical interest and unusual odds and ends.  A "tucker-upper" you'll be intrigued to learn, consists of a length of chain with a hook at one end and a clip at the other.
The idea was to enable elegantly gowned ladies to sweep through life without the constant necessity of clutching their skirts in one hand to prevent them from serving the added purpose of floor sweepers!  The "tucker-upper" was hitched to the waist and the clip fastened to a hem of the skirt to keep it at a practical level, thus enabling the user to have both hands free.
When Lancastrian looked at this reminder of by gone days he regarded it as an interesting museum piece.  On second thoughts he's not so sure.  The way the ladies' hemlines move up and down according to the dicates of fasion, it may be that Mr. Bedford's tucker-upper will be back in common use one of these days!

(Sample of the original "Spion Kop" poem by M. Walsh 2nd Batt, Lancs Fusiliers)

“Spion Kop”

These lines are dedicated to those Brave Comrades who nobly and gave their lives in the ever memorable Battle of Spion Kop which took place on January 24th 1900. Thanks to Jane Siddall for kindly sharing these unique previously 'unearthed' poems with us.

1)     Will you kindly pay attention,
        To my story, sad but true;
A few words I will mention,
That concerns both me and you.

2)     It was on the 23rd of January.
As we rested behind Three Tree Hill,
That the order came along the line,
Which caused many a heart to thrill.

3)    Spion Kop had to be taken,
By the lads of the Lancashire Brigade,
With the Twentieth in front to hear the brunt,
The assault had to be made.

4)    The Kings Own and the Fortieth,
       Who never yet knew fear,
With the T.M.J’s and the Sapper Boys,
Gave their aid the hill to clear.

5)   Along the uneven ground we marched,
       In silence deep as death;
And when we got to the hill,
We halted to take our breath.

6)   With bayonets fixed, we crept along,
And pressed on with a will,
For to uphold Old England’s honour,
       And to avenge Majuba Hill.

7)   When the summit we had gained,
Many a heart was beating fast.
And in the damp cold morning air,
      The challenge came at last.

8)  Halt! Who goes there? A voice rang out,
      In a tongue both strange and queer;
A rifle shot, a bayonet charge,
      And a gallant “British Cheer”.

9)      On, on we charged; the enemy fled,
          The hill was ours at last;
All hopes rose high as the morn drew nigh,
For the danger that was past.

10)    Alas our hopes were soon dispelled
As we soon found to our cost,
For the Boers again tried to retake,
          The position they had lost.

11)    As through the clouds the sun appears,
          Driving the mist away,
All hearts beat fast, for low at last,
We hold the Boers at bay.

12)    The Lancashire’s and Engineers,
          And T.M.J’s as well,
          Line the trenches all around,
          Their lives to dearly sell.

13)    The battle raged both fierce and fast,
          Throughout the livelong day;
And ere the sun set in the west,
Many a soul had passed away.

14)    Their’s many a mother in dear old England,
Who will often shed a tear.
When she thinks of her boy – her hope and joy,
But from whom she no more will hear.

15)    Far, far away, over the hill,
In Natal a resting place they’ve got,
And these they lie, side by side,
On the heights of Spion Kop.

Composed by M. Walsh, 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers
Presume written by a Haslingden soldier in the Boer War

****************

Another beautiful poem written by a Haslingden soldier serving in South Africa in the late 1890s. The original is done in pencil on writing paper and penned in script.  We are indebted to Jane Siddall for kindly sharing these rare unearthed “soldiers poems”.

Spartan Mother

“One more embrace; then o’er the main
And nobly play the soldiers part,”
Thus speaks, amid the martial strain,
The Spartan mother’s aching heart,
She hides her woe,
She bids him go,
And tread the path his father’s trod,
“Who fights for England, fights for God”.
Helpless to help, she waits, she weeps,
And listens for the far-off fray,
He scours the gorge, he scales the steeps,
Scatters the foe-away; away!
Feigned, as their flight,
Smite! Again smite!
How fleet their steeds! Now nimbly shod,
She kneels, she prays; “Protect him God”,
The sisters sigh, the maiden’s tear,
The wife’s the widow’s stifled wail,
These nerve the hand, these brace the spear,
And speed them over veld and vale.
What is to him,
Or life or limb,
Who sends the chain, and breaks the rod,
Who falls for freedom, falls for God.
And should it be his happy fate,
Hale to return to home and rest,
She will be standing at the gate,
To fold him to her trembling breast,
Or should he fall,
By ridge or wall,
And lie neath some green southern sod.
“Who dies for country, sleeps with God.

Additional information kindly supplied by Elizabeth Smethurst on 29th October 2015

"Just seen this on the site and wondered if you wanted some names to go with it.  I think it was taken in the late 1950s or early 1960s.
I can't name the first 3 men from the left on the back row, but the next one is my father, Clifford Willis, then don't know, then Mr. Craig, who was Parks and Cemeteries chief for the Council, 2 more unknown and finally Harold Taylor who worked with my father at Duckworth Clough Mill.
Front row I should know the first man but can't name him but he used to win lots of prizes at the show and I think lived in Helmshore.  Next to him is Billy Johnson, then Bob Spiby, who was the secretary of the society for many years, Sam Good and Reg? Whitham.  Don't know the other two.
The Allotment shows were held in the Public Hall every September.

Additional information kindly supplied by David Wise on 1st November 2015. On the back row the 2nd one from the L is Jim Wise (David's father). Front Row first left is Mr. Jack Ramsbottom. Also on the front row is Walt Taylor who lived on Broadway

"A Poem written by a HASLINGDEN soldier called Jonathan Lambert on February 5th 1894, who was in the Lancashire Fusiliers and fighting the wars in South Africa. (kindly contributed to the blog by Jane Siddall and uploaded here on 25th October 2015) The original is on paper and penned out in beautiful script (a sample shown below)

Here is part of the original poem written below

1)  The cottage was a thatch'd one,
the outside old and mean,
yet everything within that cottage,
was wondrous neat and clean

2) The night was dark and stormy,
the wind was howling wild,
A patient mother knelt beside,
the death bed of her child

3)  A little worn out creature,
His once bright eyes grown dim,
It was a colliers only child,
they called him little Jim

4) And oh to see the briny tears,
fast hurrying down her cheek,
As she offer'ed up a prayer in thought,
she was afraid to speak

5) Least she might waken one she loved,
far better than her life,
for there was all a mothers love,
In that poor colliers wife

6) With hands uplifted see she knelt,
beside the sufferers bed,
And prays that he will spare her boy,
And take herself instead

7) She gets her answer from the child,
Soft fell these words from him,
Mother the angels do so smile,
And beckon little Jim.

8) I have no pain dear Mother now,
But oh I am so dry,
Just moisten poor Jim's lips again,
And Mother don't you cry

9)  With gentle trembling haste she held,
the tea cup to his lips,
he smil'd to thank her as he took,
three little tiny sips.

10)  Tell father when he comes from work,
I said good-night to him,
and mother now I'll go to sleep,
Alas poor little Jim.

11) She saw that he was dying,
the child she loved so dear,
had uttered that last words that she,
might ever hope to hear.

12) The cottage door was opened,
the colliers step was heard,
the Mother and the father met
yet neither spoke a word.

13) He knew that all was over,
He knew his child was dead
He took the candle in his hand,
And walked towards the bed.

14)  His quivering lips gave token,
Of grief he'd fain conceal,
And to see his wife has joined him,
the stricken couple kneel

15)  With hearts bowed down with sadness,
they humbly ask of him,
In heaven once more to meet again,
their own poor little Jim

At the end of the poem is a little note:

Dear Hannah I got little Jim,
because you ask me for it
write back and let me know,
how you are getting at home

The one on the left belonged to Luke Ralph and dates back to 1907-8  and the one on the right is my own from 1972. Its been a pleasure to read some of the stuff in the old yearbook - to think (108 years old - a proper antique!  Quite a lot of the information regarding Council Committees etc are very similar between the two yearbooks even though its some 65 years between them! There is some fantastic reading about the history of Haslingden and I intend to include some extracts on here very shortly for everyone to enjoy. see next blog on...

Thanks to Marie Ives for kindly loaning me the diary to extract the information. (Uploaded these photos here on 22nd October 2015.

I do intend to make provision for interesting obituaries of which we have one or two in the archive already:

For now please enjoy this interesting obituary kindly sent in by Steve Rothwell (taken from a old local newspaper obituary found through research done by Jackie Ramsbottom some 12 years ago)

DEATH OF MR. WALLWORK ROTHWELL

By the death of Mr. Wallwork Rothwell, the Landlord of the "Red Lion" Inn, Blackburn Road, Haslingden looses a well known and thoroughly interesting personality.  He was the son of Mr. Hindle Rothwell, who formerly kept the Foresters Arms, which had been in the family for 100 years when he gave it up.  In 1863 or 1864 the late Mr. Wallwork Rothwell went to America, the sailing ship in which he went occupying six weeks in making the passage.  He subsequently served in the American Civil War under General Grant, and was under that famous General when Lee surrendered to him.  On the conclusion of the war the deceased came back to Haslingden, and in 1867 he was married, and succeeded his father as landlord of the Foresters Arms.  Four years later he became landlord of the Red Lion, where he has been during the last 38 years.  He has been a licence holder longer than anyone else in Rossendale, and he was known almost throughout the country as a victualler and sportsman.  His chief interest in sport was in the direction of coarsing and foot-racing, and he was identified with the late "Choppy" Warburton when he came out on the track, but in "Choppy's" last race at Preston the deceased was a backer of T.C. Herbert, who was "Choppy's" dangerous opponent.  The deceased had never been attended by a doctor except when he met with an injury to his hand in a tram accident, until during the last few months.  In October last he contracted a chill while attending the final in the bowling sweep at Blackpool.  His recent illness commenced about three weeeks ago, and death ensued at the weekend.  The deceased was a staunch Conservative.  The funeral took place on Wednesday at the parish churchyard, the vicar, Rev.L. Robbs, being the officiating clergyman.  The funeral was attended by Messrs. T.  Baxter, George Haworth, Dr. Broomhead (deceased's medical attendant), and by Mr. William Greenwood and other licensed victuallers and also friends from Rossendale, Church and Accrington.  The deceased, who was seventy years of age last March, is survived by a widowed daughter and two sons.

Do you know what this occasion was? but it came from my late husband's Grandma.  The lady standing at the back right side is Mrs. Daley who had a fresh fish shop in the row between Dale Street and Beaconsfield Street.  The man at the back with the uniform on is Mr. Larkin who was a fireman.  Maybe you can identify the mayor to give a clue as to the year.  I am almost sure it was taken in the Public Hall.  (Marie Ives)

CAN WE PLEASE TRY AND HELP KAREN ROGERS (nee NORCROSS)

Dear Mr. Yorke
I have read your blog with interest whilst trying to find some old photographs of my childhood home in Haslingden, particularly the information about Holland's Pies which I didn't know, as my Dad loved them!
My late parents, Bernard and Margaret Norcross, ran a sweet/toy shop at 77 Deardengate from (I believe) 1960 to 1964 and I wonder if you have any photographs of the area from this time?  I was only five or six when we left the shop, but have some memories of a greengrocer's shop a few doors along (?) and do have photographs of my Brothers and me with my parents taken in the accommodation above the shop.
The family moved to Essex in 1968/69 and don't get back up north as often as we would like.  However, the five of us, with our own children and grandchildren, recently made the trip for a family party and had a tour of our homes in Blackburn and the shop in Deardengate, which is now a general store, so any information or photographs you could let me have would be greatly appreciated.
 Kind regards

Karen Rogers

For me this photo has brought up another question! I personally can only remember the "Medals" being played on the old St. Mary's.  So did both the St James's and St Mary's run independent "Medal" Competitions and if that be the case, did the competition in later years become merged as one or did the St. James's just pack up with the St. Mary's continuing.  DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED - IF SO PLEASE LET US KNOW...THANKS!

Bryan,
One of your unknown photographs(What you sow...) has a lady on who has a passing resemblance to a  St. Stephen's nursery school teacher from  a photograph on my own site. Appears to be younger on my photo but I think it could be the same lady.

(Added 21st September 2015)I have today put a short link through on the Facebook page of the 1964 FLOODS, Do you remember them? well Derek Whittaker remembers them from when he was a teenager, and here is a fabulous account of the situation especially around the Coronation St, Every St and Charles Lane areas.
*********************************************

Bryan,
On that day I had finished delivering my paper round for Jack Hayton and called at Lynn & Jean Howarth’s house in Peel St. It was quite a normal day and I hadn’t even worn a coat for the paper round and then the hailstones! They came tumbling down the chimney covered in soot and were approaching the size of golf balls. Then the pyrotechnics started - it was late morning but soon became very dark with lots of sheet lightening and thunder. You couldn’t see across the road because the rain was that heavy.
When it all subsided it returned to a quite pleasant day. I set off down Charles Lane to our house in Coronation St. Every thirty or forty yards there was a fountain shooting up about 20 feet in the air. The pressure of the water pouring down the drain under the road had blown off the manhole covers and created this amazing sight. At the bottom of Charles Lane where the road forked left and right there was a bridge across  what had previously been a gently flowing stream. What I encountered was a poor little chap standing on the parapet of the bridge in what looked like the middle of a lake. His mates, safely three floors up in the mill were leaning out of the window having a great time shouting out things like “Swim for it Paddy, you’ve got your wellies on!!’.
It was obvious that I wouldn’t be able to get home that way so I went back up Charles Lane, through Prospect Hill and down Grane Rd.
What had happened at the bottom of Coronation St and Every St was that the railway ran along there on an embankment had a culvert where the stream ran through. The culvert couldn’t cope with the amount of flood water and also became blocked up by dustbins and other things swept up in the flood (I remember a drowned dog flowing past). The embankment became a damn and the water backed up quite dramatically. Coronation St and Every St sloped down to this encroaching new lake.
We lived at No 18, about half way down and I can remember wading through our back door with the dirty, eerily cold water being about waist high, to see my dinner floating around on the table. There was no sign of my family. I retreated and found them with others higher up the street on the other side making sandwiches and flasks of coffee/tea for those in even deeper water farther down the street. My bother, David and I clambered over the outside toilets and coal houses with these to pass them up to bedroom windows where people were stranded.
In the bottom house lived three OAP’s who asked us if we would be kind enough to see if we could rescue their television from downstairs. Believe it or not we waded in up to chest height and did! Don’t ask me what use it was going to be having spent a couple of hours underwater. When we got it to the stairs where they could lift it out they asked if we could possibly do anything about their car. We knew they had a maroon mini which was their pride and joy so back through the water, up onto the toilet roof and eventually we spotted about two inch of car aerial sticking up out of the deluge. We gave up on that one.
Slowly but surely the water started to drain away but the worst was yet to come. The mud left for some reason stunk, and I mean STUNK!! The houses didn’t have cellars but did have a void under the floors of about 2 feet. This was left filled with the stinking slime and repeated injections of disinfectant did little to improve matters.
A fund was started and I seem to remember my parents receiving £200 from it. Every piece of furniture downstairs was thrown away with the carpets. The decoration was ruined and all the appliances (oven, TV, etc) also ruined. In the “front room” there was a cupboard which held all our family photographs and a full set of Encyclopedia Brittanica that my parents had scrimped and saved for to help their son and daughter (Maureen) through grammar school. All ruined and £200 didn’t go very far to recover the situation.
In the days following a few mates and I made some good pocket money in the nearby mills sweeping the offending mud out as the water receded. Strangely at the age of 15 I was never scared or worried and I remember it as merely a very interesting event. What I do clearly also remember is the spirit of my parents and others who although badly affected rallied round and immediately started to help others in an even worse predicament. Would other places have the community spirit to be knocking up cheese butites whilst there home has filthy water washing around in it? Haslingden did.
 Derek Whittaker

Hi Bryan
I dont know where this was taken or the occasion, but that's my mum Vera Hall (nee Entwhistle) on far right in dutch girl costume, and the lady in the welsh outfit is I think Mary Watson.
My mum went to St Mary's RC church so it may have been to do with that ??
Myra

Steve Rothwell kindly sent in this photo on 1st Sept 2015. Its of the interior of St. Mary's and he thinks it will be the funeral of a past priest.  It has been suggested it could have been Father Notterdam!

The above photo is of Father Notterdam's funeral carriage outside of St. Mary's Church on Bury Road c1910.

This is a photo of the Old Billiard Hall and Cordingley's Motor Exchange which was on Higher Deardengate, in the building which is still there today next to the Library (next to Hindle Street). It certainly was not "pool" those days, but they seemed heavy on "billiards" rather than snooker. Snooker followed on.  So it all started in one era with BILLIARDS, then another era brought in SNOOKER and this then was followed by POOL.  And Cordingley's were into Cycles and Motor Cars. Cordingley's also had a place out by Prinny Hill, I dont know whether that was their first place or was it this one in the photo.  (please click over photo to enlarge)  Photo added 29th August 2015

Can we please try and help Kathy and identify where this is?  It has been suggested it is either Haslingden or possibly Waterfoot, but can you confirm were it could be. It has also been suggested that maybe the shop was prior to "Howard and Halstead the bakers. Please let me know if you have any suggestions thank you. (added 27th August 2015)

Mr Worsley lived at the Carter Place Hall and owned local Mills.  It is said he had one of the best "Orchid" collections in England which included many rarities. Mr Worsley also played a large part at the St James Parish Church, in fact you can see a family memorial stain glass window within the Church and also the Lychgate.  He was also a keen supporter and sponsor to the Haslingden Cricket Club.  (Click over photo to enlarge)  Photo added 21st August 2015.

St. Marys Morris Dancers (Photo: Steve Rothwell) (Click over to enlarge)
I have just noticed that my grandmother,Mrs. A (Agnes) Frost is mentioned twice on your
carnival blog, once as a carnival committee member and once as a dance sub-committee member.
She had connections with St.Mary`s Morris Dancers. The picture attached may be from the carnival
may be not,but Grandma is leading the dancers. She produced `gang` shows quite often, pictures may turn up and they were always at the Public Hall.
Best wishes

1933-34 (above) girls only (Thanks to Carrie Creamer Hart (Canada) for sending this photo. It does show Carrie's grandmother, who is Rose Mary Davies and she is right smack in the middle of the picture (blonde curly haired girl... third row, 9th from the left). (Photo added this time on 25th July 2015)

Dear Bryan
A few words about the image '1933-34 . . . girls only' submitted by
Carrie Creamer Hart.
Re-reading the late Arthur Chappell's account of St Mary's parish I
learnt that the picture depicts the girls wearing the school uniform -
hence the gymslips.
It seems St Mary's was the first elementary school in the town to adopt
a uniform.
Initially intended only for the girls, parents of the boys argued all
the pupils in the school should have uniforms.
This popular innovation was introduced during the headship of Mr Owen
Lindsay.
Appointed to the Haslingden school in 1921, Mr Lindsay spent most of his
career at St Mary's and remained there to the time of his retirement.
The practice  of wearing the uniform was suspended with the outbreak of
World War II.
According the the local chronicler, the uniform gave the children a
feeling of equality and they showed care for their clothing.
Regards
John Dunleavy.

Longfield House, Musbury
This photograph was taken on June 10th 1904 by Thos Firth who was born in the house.  He was on a visit from Perth, Australia, where he built a row of houses called Musbury Terrace.  The house was the old home of the Worswick family who ran Sliding's Mill on opposite bank of Musbury Brook. Photo added 23rd July 2015)

Thought this photo should be re-invented.  The photo was kindly sent in by Jennifer Gavin on 16th March 2012.  John Bedford kindly informed us that it was the 1973-74 team knockout between the Crown and The Great Tree and that the Crown won five to two.  It was played up at the Workers Club. He has also named all the players that night. I think it might be this gentleman in the photo below.  If so it would be Mr. C.H. Heathcote the headmaster of St. James Church of England School and also he was the deputy organist at St. James.
I am going with this one for now! (photo added 11th July 2015) the only problem I have with the photo below is that usually St. James photos were taken on the lawn and as a rule you would have the Church and Churchyard in the background, which in this photo it is obviously not! So now I am wondering was it took with the Salem Church in the background and if so did the Salem have chimney pots. taken with Regent St in the back would not be right because of it being a row of chimneys in a pure horizontal line, so cant see it being from that direction either.

Unknown School Party from 1919, the only reference is the name Mrs. Barlow
Do you know who the school group is?  I seem to recognise the gentlemen on the right from other older photographs, I will see if I can find and cross reference.... (Click over photo to enlarge - photo added here on 11th July 2015

 Hi Bryan,
The man on the left of the cabinet with white hair is Joseph Johnson, my great granddad.
He wrote and produced the Lancashire dialect dramas Old Nats mill(1919) and
The Plovers of Grane(1923) at the public hall. My granddad William(Billy) Johnson
later revived the dramas and produced them at St.James church in 1951 and 1953.
I still have the original handwritten scripts.

A fabulous photo kindly sent in by Douglas Newton which shows all the chimneys from Hud Hey to the Station. Note the old railway signal which was of a newer one when I used to play around that area but still in that very spot, and where the wall is on the bottom left hand corner was upended railway sleepers (in fact still there) I wonder why anyone would take a wall down like that to put timber sleepers?) and also the chimneys to the top left belonging to the Top O'th Slate.  How many chimneys are there?  I have managed 12 definite and a possible 13. That's a proper industrial photo of Haslingden's chimneys (Photo added: 5th July 2015)

This is a beautiful painting of the Grey Mare Inn, Haslingden in 1840. I wish I knew who had done this painting and then we could give him full credit here for doing such a lovely work of art. I can only presume it must be the Grey Mare over Grane Road on the junction with the turn off which goes to Pickup Bank. It certainly looks very much like that's the one! The only other Grey Mare which was in Haslingden as far as I know, was The Regent which was originally called the Grey Mare (see photo below showing it when it was the Grey Mare Hotel). (added 25th June 2015) - Click over to enlarge

Marie Ives kindly added on 25th June 2015.

She remembers paintings which were hung up on the walls of the Regent Pub, and remembers one in particular of the Grey Mare Inn, which she thinks was painted by Jack Edge

Michael Mullaney kindly added on 26th June 2015.

Hi Bryan,
The painting is I believe to be the Grey Mare in Regent Street and not over Grane.  Comparing the photograph with the painting the construction is almost identical.  I think the Grey Mare over Grane has only two levels!
The name was changed to the Regent when the street was named Regent Street after the Prince regent.
Other street names changed over time.  The start of Bury Road at Market Place was once called Silver Street.  The start of Manchester road also had another name which unfortunately I cannot just recall, sorry.
Greenfield Street was Cooperative Street. Chapel Street was Sheep Green. The start of Blackburn Road was called Chapel Street possibly because of the Chapel there. Bank Street was called Parsonage Lane and lets not forget Pag House Lane was changed in its upper half to Spring Lane, and to Railway Road in the bottom half.  Top of Hudrake was called Mount Pleasant and Pleasant St., Back Pleasant Street and Far Back Pleasant Street was called Club Houses.

Above is a photo of the Grey Mare Hotel in Regent Street, Haslingden. It was called this back in the late 1800s and still called that in 1920.  Sometime after this it changed its name to the Regent Pub. (added 25th June 2015 - Click over to enlarge)

Thanks to Joan Merrill for kindly sending in the above two photos.  "This one here shows Joan's uncle, Jim Mead, the man with the bucket in the above photo, he lived in one of the cottages at Pitt Heads before moving to Wells Street.  He kept the garden at the top of Wells Street and in the late 1950's there was a burst water main in the area and as you can see in the photo at the top a queue has been formed by the well.  He and his friends were kept busy all day." (Photos added 23rd June 2015)

Some fabulous information has been posted from a old newspaper cutting which outlines the historic LAUND HEY AND THE CRIBDEN FLATTS and gives account of it being used for Horse Racing and then later for Cricket and other recreational uses.

The Main headings are:
THE OLD HASLINGDEN RACES,
THE RACE PROGRAMME OF 1761,
LAUND HEY AS PUBLIC RECREATION GROUND
HISTORIC GROUND,

this information has now been added to the end of my existing blog entitled Top O'th' Slate.

Email received 24th June 2015:  The correct name of the French teacher on the HGS Paris trip is Alan Peckett.  He got the nickname "Ernie" from the "Little Ernie" game that was played at all the HGS Christmas parties.  Since Alan wasn't very tall, he had to put up with his Ernie nickname throughout his years at HGS. - Joan Gudgeon

Firstly, a great blog, I read it regularly and it brings back many memories, particularly St. James Primary School, Haslingden Grammar School and the Church Lads Brigade.
Attached is a photo that I own of St. Peters church walking day. I believe it was in 1959 and I defected shortly afterwards to St James church so that I could join the Church Lads Brigade.  I am the pageboy at the front carrying the cushion. I cannot recall the names of anyone else, perhaps your other readers may know some of them. Keep up the great work
kind regards

Hi Bryan,
Attached old map of Haslingden date not sure but probably at the end of the 18th century?
You may have seen it but its interesting to see just what was and wasn't developed and the names.
Rakefoot is Tower Hill.
Rockhall is clearly shown this is where Michael Davitt once lived.
The road from Pit Heads looks like a well established going down what is now Poplar Street to Bury Road.
Old Turnpike at junction of Bury Road and Back Lane with its own small community around what we knew as Size House.
Blackburn Road was New Road and Chapel Street.
Marsden Square looks organised and Market Hotel.
There is a Well marked near where Wells Street would be built.
Dearden Gate Turnpike.
The rest is open land nothing past Pleasant Street etc.
Michael Mullaney.
(Photo and text sent in by Michael Mullaney on 6th June 2015)

Michael, I am wondering if the area known as "Pits Head" relates in anyway to their being a mine in the area previous, or could it have been a "Sand Pit", does anyone actually know what "Pits Head" relates to in this case? the same area is also remembered by another name if I can remember it I will post it on the blog

Here is a old photo of the "Hazeldene Prize Jazzband", I think one of my "old" relations maybe on it!  I am hoping very shortly to do a feature blog on the musicians of Haslingden and do already have some Band and Orchestra photos in readiness, but obviously would welcome any further photos for the blog.  We had the Borough and Prize Bands, School and Borough Orchestras, Dance Bands, Beat Groups and then individuals who loved to play their instruments.  If you have any input you think you can give on this "topic" please let me know - thanks..... Can you recognize the background?  I think it may well be Worsley Park (now the childrens play area) with the rockery background..

Hello Bryan!
My name is Les Caine, and since 1987, I and my mother, have lived at 5 Greenfield Gardens, here in Haslingden. My mother was the warden here for many years, up until just a few years ago. The reason for my email, is that, I have often heard some of the older residents here, talking about a mansion, that used to occupy the site, before the current Greenfield Gardens scheme was built, around 1959 I think it was.
I was wondering if you had any information, regarding the existence and location of this mansion or manor house.
I would be absolutely fascinated to learn anything regarding this Mansion/Manor house, and who lived there and when.
Apparently, what is now the bowling green in the Memorial Gardens, used to be part of this mansion and was actually, supposedly the tennis court.
I do not know if all, or even any of this is actually true or not, as I say, it is just something I have heard some of the older residents talk about occasionally.
I would be most grateful for any information!
Yours Sincerely
Les Caine
dated 28th May 2015

Les I can only help in so much that I do have the following two photos in the archive (shown further down). Before its demolition to make the Greenfield Gardens it had been a Massage Centre called the Greenfield Massage Centre.  Prior to this I am informed that it was once the residence of the local Industrialist "Stott" family, and prior to that the "Warburton" family

(Received 29th May 2015)  I was around 9 years old I was practising for a gym display on the vicarage lawn at St James Primary school and I broke my arm . The headmaster Mr John Haworth or Jonty as he was known took me to a building in Greenfield Gardens where they X- rayed my arm before sending me to Accrington Victoria Hospital to have it set in plaster. I remember being absolutely terrified . The X Ray machine was huge and when they started to lower it over my arm I thought I would be crushed . How things have changed since the late 1940's !!!!  Hope this will be of interest . Regards Dorothy Birtwistle .

Well if these photos don't cool you down! I guess its probably the opposite of what we want right now!  But Andrew Bridge has kindly shared his photos from 1994 showing that Haslingden really does get snow from time to time.

The top photo shows Bury Road with the Mary Hindle Resource Centre, and further on the Grammar School can be seen. 2nd photo is showing Hargreaves Street at the junction with King Street and here it shows the old Haslingden Marsden Square Flats. The 3rd photo down is showing the old Market Place area where the "Big Lamp" once stood. The Trades Club can be seen on one corner and the old tyre place etc etc etc can be seen on the opposite corner at the top of Bell Street. The 4th and final photo is again of Hargreaves Street showing the Mill on the right hand side and the flats on the left.

Statham and Hirst - Insurance Brokers old office in Lower Deardengate
(Click over to enlarge)
Both photos have been kindly sent in by Barbara Hendry who used to work at the Offices. The Offices where closed in the 1990s and she found them in one of the cupboards.  It is thought that they originally would have belonged to Mr. Statham when he originally bought the property.
Photos: uploaded on the blog on 2nd May 2015.  Will also be added to Lower Deardengate Blog.

I have included this photo from a earlier blog entitled "58 But Where in Haslingden" and a request was made to try and establish whereabouts in Haslingden was this frontage.

Barbara who sent in the above Statham and Hirst photos wonders if perhaps the old Offices may be the same front as shown in this No.58. She mentions the door seems very similar in both photos. The only thing here which throws me a little is that in the Statham old photos it shows large dressed stones to both the right hand and left hand of the shop, whereby in this photo it shows "set back shoddies".

"Where Fairies Dance to the Spirits tune"

(Click over postcard to enlarge)

Plunder the Glen, our dear Fairy Glen,
Where serpents hiss out loud, like,
Watchful guards o’er a bountiful bond!
Keep ever quiet to hear the creaking tales,
Of spirits weaving in and out of shadows,
Whispering their past in drunken mourn.

A worth of skilful touch to bubbling air,
That made the Fairies bent with glee,
And whisked off their feet in giddy spree,
Whilst glowing a faint flickering light,
As they brushed past the stillness of night,
It’s still going on century on and on and on

A lot of people I have spoken to did not realize that the "old" Cordingley's also used to run the Char-a-Banc as well as selling cycles and motor cars. I have posted already on the blog photos showing Cordingleys Char-a-Banc outside of the Trinity Baptist Church taking their members on a day outing. Also there is another photo showing Cordingley's near to Glebe Cottages on Rising Bridge Road taking a works outing  (added this photo on 12th April 2015)

This is a very interesting photograph.  I think it may well have been taken on Blackburn Road outside the old Co-op buildings which are now the antique centre, and next door was Hunts Fish and Chip shop, where in this photo it shows the same shop as Bullock & Sons.  Also another fact that helps identification to this is the tram lines.

From old photographs the other two gentlemen in uniform look like they could possibly be from the St. James Church Lads Brigade, I also seem to recognise the bearded gentlemen from other CLB photos, the officers did used to wear uniform hats like this and also the medallion on the breast of the bearded gentlemen looks very like CLB Medal.

Dear sir I have been looking at old photos of Helmshore and I note one marked no2 A Constantine Helmshore.  I am Christopher Constantine and my family lived in Helmshore from the 1860s the women holding a bag and wearing a black hat looks remarkably like my great grand mother who lived at the Bungalow in snighole Helmshore she died in 1944. Do you have any more info on this gathering?
Kind regards
C.Constantine.

I also have a cutting- hence the knowledge that Elsie was an officer in the 21st Rossendale Girl Guides and a/the Secretary at Haslingden Grammar School.

The above three photos show the funeral procession of Late Mr. J.L. Whittaker.  The photo shows the procession whilst on its approach to Ebenezer Baptist Church going up through Pleasant Street in the year c1911. It is quite obvious from the attendance by so many distinguished people that Mr Whittaker was held in high esteem.  I wonder if it was the forerunner to the same Whittaker family who owned the cotton manufacturers down Grane Road?

It looks so grand to see so many in bowlers and top hats whilst trudging the wet stone setts. Where are all the ladies? they must have come along after the gentlemen! WOW is that how it was them days!  there's been lots of changes since this photo was taken.

I was wondering what perhaps qualified you to be wearing a top hat against wearing a bowler hat?  It looks to me from the photos that perhaps the more mature gentlemen got the privilige of wearing the Top Hat! there was definitely something in this because its as though the top hats were in their own little groups! So not just ladies that were segregated!

I am a Lancastrian in exile in the Midlands.  I really enjoy your nostalgia site.  I grew up in Helmshore, where I attended primary school, and then went to HGS.  Sundays, were spent at Springhill Wesleyan Methodist Chapel which amalgamated, about 1962, with Zion Primitive Chapel to form Helmshore Methodist Chapel.
I have found the attached photo which I do not remember seeing on your site.  It was taken before a Whit Walk on the steps of Springhill, about 1951.
From the left at the bottom is me, Florence Clough, Jean Coupe, ??, Christine Mitchell, Cheryl Edgerton,?!?!, Janet Schofield and in front of the basket, Gwen Entwistle.  Further back are:- Margaret Ramsbottom, Gillian Parkinson, ? Cordingley, Beryl Jepson and her cousin Joan, Barbara Seville, Gwen Fitton.  Sorry that it is not brilliant quality. Best wishes Florence Walsh. (Photo kindly sent in and uploaded on 26th February 2015)

Cycle Proficiency Test - County Primary School c1963
This photo has been kindly sent in by Steven Smith who took part in this Cycle Proficiency test whichwas held in the School playground. The Mayor was Councillor Frank Mitchell  of Helmshore.
It was taken prior to undertaking our cycling proficiency test.  I am Steven Smith no. 30.  I only lived in Haslingden from 1960 to 1966 but loved it.  I have just seen the two pics of my class at the primary school from 59 and 60 but they appear to be from just before I joined.  I recognise a few names (and a couple of faces) though.
I think I can remember the names of the boys on the cycling pic but not sure about the girl.
I have managed to find myself on the HGS picture from 1965 and also the Criccieth school camp from the same year. Thank you. Steven Smith

Gospel Street Mission

Kindly sent in by Keith Burton: These are my last two processions for the time being.  Does anyone know more about the Gospel Misson on Bury Road, when these might have been taken and where A. Haworth's shop was?

BJY: I was'nt aware the Gospel Mission was previously on Bury Road, although it does reference the Mission to have started at the bottom of Chapel Street (which I suppose is almost Bury Road), I only ever knew of the one on George Street, Haslingden, next to the IDL Club which was closed down and eventually ravaged by Fire.

Looking at the clothe's they are wearing, they would probably not correspond with the early 1850's period!  It looks to me more like the 1930s-1940s period, and Its is running through my mind that these photos could possibly relate to the Gospel Mission which is/was at Wood Top, Bury Road, Rawtenstall. Can anyone out there help on this?

I have now found this reference taken from Chris Aspin's Book "Haslingden" p104 - The church was opened on November 13th 1859 - The Haslingden Gospel Mission was started by a wheelwright and a coal merchant in 1885 after they had seen a group of clergymen playing cards for money.  The first meeting place was a lodging house at the bottom of Chapel Street to which many went in clogs and shawls.  Services were subsequently held in the lower room of the Public Hall until the George Street Premises were opened in 1896.

There was also a "Mission" at the bottom of Union Street but I was too young to have taken notice of what it was called!

Photos: kindly sent in by Keith Burton on 22nd February 2015

Update from Marie Ives at 2100hrs 22nd February 2015: The picture is Bury Road, Rawtenstall.  The Gospel Mission in Haslingden was On George Street and the small church at the bottom of Union Street off Blackburn Road at the time of the end of the war was the Gospel Hall.  I remember going there with my schoolfriends on Monday evenings.  It was demolished together with the doctor's surgery at the bottom of Regent Street for road widening in later years.  Marie Ives

Update from Jackie at Haslingden Roots at 1300hrs 23rd February 2015: A old photo here from Jackie at Haslingden Roots which now confirms that the photos above do definately refer to the Rawtenstall Gospel Mission at Bury Road, Woodtop, Rawtenstall.

Here is a photo I purchased (via ebay ) last year which shows Haslingden Station after closure, when most of the station buildings on the North Side had already been removed. The steam train in the photo is a double header (two steam trains at the front)  Good distance photo of Clough End Mill, and you can just about make out the houses which were Back Carr Mill Street. This photo shows the original watercourse of the Swinnel Brook which you can clearly see on the left of the photo, the brook had crossed under the railway at about the point where the front of the train can be seen and then ran parallel with the railway track and then crossed back under the railway track yet again and under the Station at roughly the point of the foot bridge and came out again just above the Commercial Mill Company just at the side of the North Hag Tunnel (mound) at the point of the start of  Bridge Street (or maybe locally better known as Donkey Row). The watercourse these days has been diverted from its original course to run alongside the bye pass on the opposite side of the track (or bye pass). (photo: added on 20th February 2015) - Please enlarge the photo by clicking over

This is a fabulous photo of the Haslingden Modern School, dinner time club which was held in
the main assembly room and commenced at about 1230hrs and would carry on until 1300hrs
with all the latest pop records.  I can recognise one or two on this photo: Gwen Woods the blonde in the couple to the left hand side next to the back, also Elaine Astin on the right hand side front couple. There is probably more when I get the chance to look more closely.
Photo: kindly sent in by Pauline Emmett Dagg on 13th February 2015 - Click over to enlarge

Just found this message from Pauline which names more dancers:
Hi Bryan..... I found the picture of the dinner time club..... Names from the top: ?, and Sheila White, then Kathleen Leach and Vera Judson, LH side next to Back Blonde is Gwen Woods and the late Jenny Hodgkinson (RIP), then Barbara Stott and Margaret Smith, then Muriel Kane ? and Julie Hague, then Pauline Emmett and Carole Edwards, then Christine Naylor and ?, Elaine Astin and Margaret Hall (RIP)...... I hope some people find it interesting ..... Pauline Emmett Dagg

Sandra Smith remembers it was Mr. Colbourne (Science teacher) who would play the records and that it cost 1p (one penny) to go in and they would then spend the money towards the latest records.

I’m not 100% sure but I think the two girls front right is Anne Simms & Barbara Steele ( Wilburs sister ).All the best ( Brian Yap Wilson )

I found the photo of the Secondary Modern School interesting as Alan Cockerill  and Jack Aryton were in the same year as me when I was at Grammar School and Alan was my Best Man when I was married in 1956.  Alan lived at Mangholes Farm Acre before he was married and died about five and a half years ago aged 79. I think it was 1966 when he married Winifred Heap who was the daughter of  the school  secretary at the time.  Clifford Hargreaves 9th Feb 2015)

This latest postcard states on the back (in pencil) that it comes from Haslingden.  I don't recognise the road at all.  What a wonderful banner "Ye little Morris Dancers for King and Empire"  I dont think that they were still around by my childhood.  Enjoy - Keith Burton. (Photo kindly sent in by Keith  Burton on 1st February 2015 - Please click over to enlarge)

(BJY:  Like I said to Keith, I don't think this photo is from Haslingden. The buildings in this photo are not recognisable to me and they appear also to be built in brick, where all main street buildings in Haslingden are built in their local native stone!  Keith has asked that we go ahead with the photo in the hopes that someone may just recognise where it is!

Keith Burton: Here is another one - This time from the Ebenezer Baptist Church in procession in Lower Deardengate. I have included the message on the back of the postcard (Click here to see writing on card). Clearly it is from Tommy Wilkinson and refers to his sister, Eleanor. I wonder if anyone knew/knows of them.
I hope that you enjoy it.  Keith (Postcard kindly sent in by Keith Burton on 30th Jan 2015 - Please click over to enlarge)

Keith Burton: Here's the next procession. The name  St Peter's Haslingden has been whitened out, but it can still be read. This card was used, with a pencil message on the back (Click here to see pencil message -external site). It implies that Harry and Kathleen are at the front of the procession. I doubt that anyone will be recognised, but who knows. (Photo: kindly sent in by Keith Burton on 29th Jan 2015 - Click over to enlarge)

Jack Pilling: Couldn't find this picture on your blog so have attached. As you can see it is in it's original position before being dismantled and rebuilt. What a project!!   Jack (Photo kindly sent in by Jack Pilling on 29th Jan 2015 - Please click over photo to enlarge)

(from Jack Pilling) This is a old postcard of Hutch Bank showing the large detached house on the far top left where my wife Barbara lived at one time. (from Keith Burton) Here are another couple of photos. The one (above this one) of the Boys Brigade on Bury Road. The other card is of an unknown group of girls in very fancy dresses and bonnets, accompanied by their very elegant chaperone. They are outside Miller's shop and there is another shop sign which I can't read. Can anyone help in identifying the group, the street and/or the other shop? Keith (Photos above kindly sent in by Keith Burton on 28th Jan 2015) Please click over photos to enlarge)

Hi Brian, Two pictures for you. The first one (photo above this photo) is of my dad with a winning team on Dark Lane. I do not know what team or what comp they won.
I only know Bill Hanson to his left and I think next to him right is a man called Riley. I would love to know a bit more about it but as it was in the 1940's it's very doubtful.
The other photo (directly above this text) is a School team from around 1957. You probably know them all. I know the middle three on the back Brian Nuttall, Frank Ireson & Frank Hamnett.
Middle row left Chris Maden & right Brian Downham & Joe Harrison on the front row. Photo kindly sent in by Jack Pilling on 28th January 2015) Please click over photo to enlarge.

Keith Burton - Not having found my Peace Celebrations card on the blog, I have attached it. I have now reached my stack of Church Processions and gatherings. Here is one with the title printed on it of Manchester Rd Wesleyans. It is an unused postcard so there is no date on it. The clothes look pre-WWI. Do you know where they are gathered? - I don't recognise it at all. There will be more to follow. (Photos above kindly sent in by Keith Burton on 27th January 2015) Click over photo to enlarge.

27th Jan reply from Marie Ives in relation to Manchester Road Wesleyans photo above: I think that the crowds on the photo are outside the Lindens and the pub is The Swan with Althams next door, Just a suggestion Marie Ives

Keith Burton - The photo directly above I have described as a Wesleyan Walk in the Market Place - I am sure of the place, but there is no real evidence that the group is Wesleyans or even that it is a religious walk. Any alternative views and evidence are welcome. The second one is clearly a gathering of Methodists, mainly Wesleyans, on Marsden Square and showing King Street and Wilkinson Street. On the back is written, in pencil, Manchester Road. C an anyone help with confirming the place more exactly and even better the time/occasion etc.(Keith Burton has kindly sent in these photos on 27th January 2015) Click over photo to enlarge

Haslingden c1909 (click over photo to enlarge)

This is such a interesting photograph which seems to show Haslingden Fire Brigade in a local Parade.  To me it looks as though they are going along Bury Road from the Market Place direction.  At the front bottom corner right there is a dressed corner stone!  This is the corner stone to the  Grammar School and is still present today at the Old School Mews properties?

The opening on the opposite side is Hindle Street

If it is Bury Road then the large chimney does not look far away as though it could possibly be somewhere at the back of the Library or would it have been far enough back to have been the chimney of the old Bell Street Factory. (Photo: archived 19th January 2015)

Information kindly supplied by Jim Haworth on 4th Feb 2015 - The horse pulling the little coach was driven by Jim's Grandfather and sat besides him were his twin daughters, one of which is Alice (Jim Haworth's Mum) and her twin was Elizabeth and they were born about 1905 ish.  The Grandfather was a chief fireman, he also may have used the twins in an old picture we have seen where they were being carried down from a building by ladder on rehearsal photo taken about 1907 or thereabouts.

New Publication: (Notice received from Chris Aspin on 12th January 2015).

I have just published a pamphlet called "Strange Stories from a Lancashire Village" which covers unusual experiences, which both Helmshore and Haslingden people have given me over many years: ghosts, coincidences and so on.  Since it came out just before Christmas, several people have contacted me with similar stories, so a sequel is on the cards.

Some of your readers and contributors may have tales to tell which I would try and put in the sequel if they let me have the information.

The pamphlet is on sale in Neary's (Gregory Fold) and other local outlets at £2 each (plus 60p postage - if UK posting required).

The above two photos have been sent in by Keith Burton. The top one depicts St James Church within a interesting frame.  The second photo above is of Fern Bank which is opposite the Memorial Gardens and shows all the buntings out for the Royal visit.  Keith writes " On the back of the postcard was written 82 Manchester Road, where we lived from 1943 to 1949, is the house at the right hand end of the photo. (Both above photos kindly supplied by Keith Burton on 18th January 2015 - Please click over photos to enlarge)

This is another interesting World War I postcard. It is unused so I can't date it or decipher where it was taken. Looking at the notices strongly suggests that it was quite early in the war, possibly outside the Public Hall when it was being used as a temporary hospital for the Belgian soldiers and refugees (Keith Burton).  (Photo kindly sent in by Keith Burton on 18th January 2015 - Please click over to enlarge)

Another lad who used to help us at Kirkhill Farm - Brian "Yap" Wilson contacted me after seeing the picture of my Dad at the Farmer's Show.
Just hoping that there will be more.  My phone numbers in case anyone does are: 01706 228970 or mobile: 07950209573 - thanks Jack Pilling.  (Above photo kindly sent in by Jack Pilling - please click over to enlarge)

Haslingden Youth Club Netball Team 1960.

Hi Bryan, I thought this picture would go in your Haslingden Youth Club section. It was published in "Lancashire Life" magazine circa 1960.
My wife Barbara Nuttall has difficulty remembering details of the competition they won but thinks it was at Preston between several "Youth Club" teams.
Perhaps any of the other team members may have more memories of the event.    Jack  (Photo kindly sent in by Jack Pilling on 1st Jan 2015)

The above photos and following text was kindly sent in by Keith Burton. (Please click over any of the photos to enlarge) Two of these three postcards are clearly part of a series.  They are all posed photos - showing the nursing staff and some very bored looking Belgians.  Clearly the Public Hall was in use for a time, but was the actual temporary hospital there or was it perhaps in the old Workhouse, which later became the district hospital.

Why were they in Haslingden?  It was hardly a centre of any note.  Presumably all towns were expected to do their bit.  It looks as if the Belgians weren't too pleased to be dumped in the North East of Lancashire. I don't suppose that they found many French or Flemish speaking citizens among the millowners or millworkers.

Does anyone know the name of the clergyman on the left of the 2nd row in the top postcard?

I shall keep looking for the missing cards (at least 2).  I have another postcard of the nursing staff and these appear to be Red Cross Personnel...
from Keith Burton 30th December 2014.
added by B.J. Yorke 30th Dec 2014 The top photograph shows Dr. John Atkinson Harrison of Hazlewood sat to the right centre on the second row.  Also there is another of his family members on the photograph which is Kate Evelyn Harrison (Dr. John's younger sister) who is fourth from the left on the same second row and next but one to Dr. John.  (Please check out Dr. Jonathan Atkinson Harrison blog by clicking here)

This picture could be of interest. It was taken at a Young Farmers Show on St Peter's around 1950. In the centre in the trilby is my dad Billy.
If you look behind his cow just to the left is me. On the stage behind under the flag are the officials. They include Eddy Winterbottom of Laund Slack Farm,
Charlie Simpson of Helmshore. Also in the picture is Fred Barlow also from Helmshore. The events were well attended and included a Cart Horse Derby.
I wonder if there any more pictures out there. I would be interested to see them. The Young Farmers were very prominent then, staging their own dances etc.  (Photo: kindly sent in by Jack Pilling 26th Dec - Please click over photo to enlarge)

They are early 1960's vans of which pictures are rare. The Lambretta is mine which I rode to work for 2 years (Brave me!) Jack (Photo: kindly sent in by Jack Pilling 26th Dec - Please click over to enlarge)

This picture was taken on the Helmshore Primary School field in the Accrington and District Football League.  My dad on the back row was 50 years old at the time and I a very innocent 18.  We played together for the whole season.  Some four years later when I was playing for Haslingden Youth Club he played for us when we were a man short.  Unfortunately his knees became too bad for him to continue playing, although he never lost his love of playing football and always kept a pair of boots for when he got his new knees!  That never happened but some years later when Helmshore Methodists were playing a match on St. Peter's playing fields we were a man short and he offered his services.  We declined his offer for which he was not happy at all about (What a man!).
He was voted Accrington Football League's Player of the Year in 1959 which I had to collect for him as he was in Scotland buying cattle.
***
I well remember having friendly matches on Sunday afternoons which lasted from 1pm until teatime. The score line wasn't relative as we always finished with a  "Winning Goal"
Holidays were the same, one week in Butlin's Skegness holiday camp which saw Dad captaining the winning house team with large crowds watching every kick.
Mind you he was only in his mid 40's then!!

Found this picture of Hassy youth club football team. I think it is from season 1962/63.
If it was it was the year of the big freeze when we couldn't play for 3 months because of the extreme weather. (Photo: kindly sent in by Jack Pilling - added Dec 23rd - Click over to enlarge)

Hi, Another one for the Hollands archive. The two people in the the foreground are Production Manager Joseph Nicholas (Left) and John Kay (right)
In the background the men there include Hubert Taylor who doubled up as van driver and production operative. The decorations are for the coronation of King George the 6th in 1937. (Photo: kindly supplied by Jack Pilling on Dec 24th - Please click over photo to enlarge

This is a photo of Hollands dispatch side of the building that I actually took myself in the early 1960's.  All the vans were out delivering at the time.  Back then the vans had to reverse through that door to be loaded up with products.  The famous Holland's chimney was then complete carrying the logo "Hollands Pies", unfortunately it needed to be reduced in height in the 1970s and became just "Hollands".  In the mid 1980's it was taken down altogether.  The Lancashire Boiler for which the chimney served was also removed to make room for the new Pudding department. (Photo: kindly sent in by Jack Pilling 22nd December.  Please click over to enlarge)

This is a photo of Holland's cookhouse where all the fillings were produced.  Not sure of when it was taken but I worked in this department in the early 60's.  The first man on the left is James Horrocks from Haslingden who was still running the department then.  So I guess it was in the early 1950's. (Photo: kindly sent in by Jack Pilling 22nd December. Please click over to enlarge)

This photo is of a man named John Kay who was in charge of the 4am shift who did the preparation for the bakery shift who started at 6.30am.  He was a Haslingden man who was still running that shift in 1961 when I joined.  He was famous for whistling bird songs in the manner of Ronny Ronald who made a very popular record of "In a Monastery Garden" in which he imitated various bird songs.  Both were very impressive !! Again not sure of date but certainly 1930's, 1940's or even 1950's. (Photo: sent in by Jack Pilling 22nd Dec - Please click over photo to enlarge)
